A Round Table of the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use of the Russian Federation (ROSNEDRA) was held prior to the Forum on 11th October, offering a platform for direct dialogue between the heads of the Agency, the State Reserves Committee of the Russian Federation and the CEOs of mining companies. The most important topics of discussion were: financing of liquidation of subsoil use consequences, liberalisation of waste utilisation, simplified subsoil use procedure and expertise in geological subsoil studies.

At the opening of the Forum, the participants were greeted by Evgeniy Kiselev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, Head of the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use, and Timur Toktabayev, Vice Minister of the Ministry for Investments and Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Mineral Exploration Network (Finland) won the competition, together with St. Petersburg State University the company developed method of geochemical prospecting for gold and other precious metals. The winner was invited by Polymetal to apply its technology for exploration in Armenia.

Many discussions held during the Forum highlighted the upbeat trends in Russia’s mining sector. Positive changes are evolving in subsoil use regulation and investment climate. Gold mining sector is going through unprecedented consolidation and growth. Many talks focused on the need for intensifying geological exploration and improving project economics.

An interactive networking platform used during the Forum offered the participants opportunity to communicate in real time and to arrange personal meetings.

Blitz polls, conducted at each session, reflected the views of the audience on various aspects of today’s Russian mining industry and highlighted the expectations.

The Forum was concluded with the Awards Ceremony of three competitions: the 11th Russian Mining Excellence Award, the 6th annual “Miners and Mines of Russia” photo competition and the “MineTech” technological challenges contest.
