Responsible Mining Index and emerging consensus linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

The Responsible Mining Index 2018 (RMI) aims for continuous improvement in responsible mining on economic, environmental, social and governance issues, based on the belief that minerals and metals mining should benefit the economies, improve the lives of peoples and respect the environment of producing countries whilst ensuring that mining companies can benefit in a fair and viable way. We see an emerging consensus around the world on what constitutes responsible mining practices and policies and these are closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. At the same time the principles of open data are increasingly being adopted to support constructive dialogue in the industry. How can companies, governments and civil society work together in practical ways to build trust and ensure continuous improvement in responsible mining practices, policies and regulations.
